Electronics waste is an ecological time bomb for Developing Countries such as Nigeria

Some 50 million tones of hazardous e-waste, various electronics that have long met their life cycle and now need to be disposed, are being generated each year. The figure has risen dramatically compared to previous years and will continue to do so in the future as well, in part because manufacturers have constantly lowered their product’s life cycles, from five years on average to two years on average, for increased profits. With this in mind, the issue is far from being new, what’s clear is that people, and especially governments and major electronics manufacturers, need to be reminded of this great peril some parts of the world might be facing.

Often times, governments of developed countries wash their hands off and send their e-waste over to developing countries, where labor is cheaper and environmental laws are more permissive. Here, in parts of the world like Africa or Asia, precious metals that go into e-waste (gold, silver and platinum from microchips, motherboards etc.) are basically scavenged under precarious working conditions, leading to extensive pollution of air, water, food and people.

Germ Alert!


Used the lift, bought a drink from a vending machine or paid a visit to the ATM recently? Chances are you've encountered more than you bargained for and picked up potentially hazardous germs.


The World Health Organisation urges caution where large numbers of people congregate. "Especially when they are eating food… there is a greater risk of the spread of diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A, typhoid and other diarrhoea-causing diseases."

These communicable diseases are very common in Nigeria, and our exposure to germs increases dramatically beyond the home. One studies shows that people touch up to 300 surfaces in a 30-minute period when out in public.

What's more, we often don't realise what's dirty and what isn't. A washroom survey of nearly 500 people in Sydney and Melbourne shows a majority avoid using public toilets when they can. Yet while 77 per cent said they wouldn't touch the toilet seat, only 36 per cent avoided the toilet door handle – often far worse for contamination.
Meanwhile, the US International Journal of Environmental Health Research reports twice as much contamination in playgrounds as in public restrooms. And other studies show vending machine and ATM buttons are also unhygienic, yet few people worry about touching them.

"We were surprised by our results because ATM machines were shown to be heavily contaminated with bacteria to the same level as nearby public lavatories," says microbiologist Dr Richard Hastings. Such contaminants are transferred to the hands and onto personal belongings almost 90 per cent of the time.

Lack of hand washing is the major culprit in creating unhygienic public spaces. Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water or using hand sanitiser – especially after using public facilities and before you eat – reduces the risk substantially.

You should also limit the surfaces you touch: do you really need support from the escalator railing? Best of all, be conscious of where your hands are, and avoid touching your mouth or nose, when out in public. You may be rewarded, and enjoy a cold and flu free rainy season.

New plastics could enable car and aircraft components to fix themselves when broken


Imagine a future in which artificial materials can repair themselves – cars and aircraft that heal like human bone and skin. Biological materials can regenerate after damage, but until recently self-repair was almost unknown in artificial materials. New plastics can be designed with atoms and molecules that re-bind after damage to allow machines to fix themselves. Self-healing polymers could vastly improve the durability and safety of critical components in cars and aircraft.

Polymers are materials made of many repeating units connected together, and the best-known examples of polymers are plastics. When man-made polymers suffer excess mechanical or thermal stress, they become irreversibly damaged. The research designs and develops self-repairing polymers by incorporating atoms and molecules that can re-bind after damage. The design process starts with computer simulations, then moves to experimental studies in the lab, before testing prototypes of new materials in real-world situations.

Self-repairing materials could make cars and aircraft that heal themselves like human bone and skin.

Physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking Says He Would Consider Assisted Suicide If He Had 'Nothing More To Contribute'

Acclaimed physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking says he would contemplate ending his own life through assisted suicide if he ever became too much trouble to care for or if he felt he could no longer live a productive life.
"To keep someone alive against their wishes is the ultimate indignity. I would consider assisted suicide only if I were in great pain or felt I had nothing more to contribute but was just a burden to those around me," Hawking told British comedian Dara O’Briain for an upcoming BBC television piece, The Guardian reports.
But the 74-year-old scientist said he'd be "damned if I'm going to die before I have unravelled more of the universe," according to The Telegraph.
Hawking has spoken previously about assisted suicide -- or assisted dying, as it's referred to in the United Kingdom. Last year, both the scientist and Desmond Tutu strongly backed a parliamentary bill that would allow doctors to provide a lethal dose of medication to terminally ill patients with less than six months to live, Slate reported.
Assisted dying is currently illegal in the U.K.
The issue made headlines in the United States last November when terminally ill Brittney Maynard chose to end her own life under Oregon's Death with Dignity Act. Throughout her final months, Maynard became a strong advocate for patients' rights.
"I do not want to die. But I am dying. And I want to die on my own terms," she wrotein a blog post for CNN.
Britain's director of public prosecutions announced last October that doctors and nurses in the country who help the terminally ill take their own lives would be less likely to face criminal charges.
Hawking, subject of the Oscar-nominated "The Theory of Everything," told the BBC last year that he tried to commit suicide in the 1980s "by not breathing" but "the reflex to breathe was too strong." He currently isn't in any pain, The Telegraph reports, but suffers discomfort sometimes because he's unable to adjust his position.
"We should not take away the freedom of the individual to choose to die," Hawking told the BBC.

WORLD'S LONGEST AIRCRAFT TO FLY CHINA-US ROUTES BY JANUARY 2015

The world's longest aircraft, Boeing 747-8, with a total length of 76.4 metres will begin flight on the Beijing-New York and Beijing-San Francisco routes from January 2015. Air China disclosed this on Thursday November 6. The Boeing 747-8 have been operating on Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Guangzhou routes since early October when it joined Air China's fleet.


Boeing 747-8 jumbo passenger jet was unveiled February 13, 2011 at the company's commercial airplane manufacturing facility based in Everett, Washington.


Boeing 747-8 has 365 seating capacity and maximum flight range of 14,815km. Air China will become the first Asian airline plane to use this model of aircraft.

CAREER INSIGHT: Career in Science; Many JAMBITES are just ignorant

College and secondary school students who are interested in science are often held in the dilemma of making careers choices or just deciphering what they really want to achieve from the study of science. Obviously the sciences are usually held as classics in our schools and students of science in the senior classes also enjoy the prestige as well as the respect from school mates, family and friends.

However, the knowledge of career opportunities available to an average science student in a typical secondary school in Nigeria is very minimal, in adequate and worst of all, highly stereotyped. Imagine this scenario, which I believe everyone can relate with. Sure, if you ask JAMBITES who have majored in science about their preferred course of study in the universities, there’s absolutely a high probability of getting a stereotypical mention of Medicine, Pharmacy and Engineering (mainly Petrochemical, Mechanical and Electrical/Electronics) among over 90% of the students!


 
 

It’s clear therefore that many students leave school with little knowledge of the vast areas of specialization in science which keeps on increasing by the day as a result of new discoveries and breakthroughs. Even our unending need to understand more concepts and specific areas of a body of science have led to the use of tools and methods that were traditionally employed in a particular field. This has also given rise to courses that are multidisciplinary and are currently at the frontiers of science. Typical examples are Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology among others.

Career insight in science therefore tops the list of pressing needs of students in senior secondary schools. In fact, “What course do you want to study in the university?” have become a real nightmare question for many young aspiring scientists. Additionally, the twin challenge of meeting up with parents’ desires and dreams of going into one of the ‘hottest’ or say, professional courses in science makes career choice even more of a frustration and helpless situation. We see also that parents have themselves stereotyped what a lucrative and successful career in science should be and anything different would never be good enough for their wards who they should be proud in some couple of years to have as doctors, pharmacists and engineers. Of course, the society would have to respect them more for having children in those professions; a skewed thinking that have caused so many untold damages and frustrations.

Career advice and counseling are very essential for students, as early as junior secondary years. Focusing on a student’s area of competence/strengths and skills is key, followed by interest. It would be so difficult for many especially parents to agree, however the reality remains that career choice is all about the student, and must be carefully and deliberately left for the student to make; though not without good enough guidance from parents, teachers and even elder siblings. Students must also be open for criticism and probing concerning their preferred choices and career paths, and be sure to put every issue raised into perspective before the final important decision.

 
I want every JAMBITE to know that there are a thousand and one careers in science they can successfully go into from Agriculture to Public Health, down to Zoology. A student also has no business going into any discipline s/he has neither interest nor good at, no matter who is pressurizing or cajoling them. Careers must not be pursued just to proof points that are baseless. Students should study wide and get more knowledge of the diverse wonderful and useful careers in science.

Some things to know about the Ebola Virus Disease.

Ebola virus disease (EVD; formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever) is currently a public health issue in Some West African countries. The outbreak is now confirmed to be caused by a strain of ebolavirus with very close homology (98%) to the Zaire ebolavirus. This is the first time the disease has been detected in West Africa.
Cases were first reported from forested areas in south-eastern Guinea. The outbreak has rapidly evolved and several districts and Conakry have reported cases and deaths caused by EVD. A small number of suspected cases and deaths has also been reported from neighbouring countries with all of them having crossed from Guinea. Confirmed cases have been reported from Guinea and Liberia.
Ebola virus disease is a severe, often fatal illness, with a case fatality rate of up to 90%. It is one of the world’s most virulent diseases.The infection is transmitted by direct contact with the blood, body fluids and tissues of infected animals or people. Severely ill patients require intensive supportive care. During an outbreak, those at higher risk of infection are health workers, family members and others in close contact with sick people and deceased patients.

Ebola virus disease outbreaks can devastate families and communities, but the infection can be controlled through the use of recommended protective measures in clinics and hospitals, at community gatherings, or at home.

As of July 6, 2014, WHO announced a cumulative total of 844 suspect and confirmed cases of Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) and 518 deaths being reported from Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Of the 884, 626 cases have been laboratory confirmed. In Guinea, 408 cases, with 307 fatal cases and 294 laboratory confirmations, were reported by the Ministry of Health (MoH) of Guinea and WHO. 
No case of EVD have been reported in Nigeria.

No Plan To Ban Tobacco Smoking, says Nigerian Reps.

The Nigerian House of Representatives which is currently considering a proposed legislation that sought to "regulate" tobacco production, packaging and promotional activities, said on wednesday that it had no plans to ban tobacco smoking in the country. A Joint House Committee on Health and Justice, made the clarification at a public hearing on 11 health-related bills, including the tobacco smoking bill in Abuja.
The major aim of this bill, according to the joint committee lead chairman is  "to provide a legal framework for the control of the production, manufacture, sale, labeling, advertising, promotion, sponsorship, use of tobacco products and exposure to tobacco smoke in order to promote the health of the individual." 
The British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) however stated during the public hearing  for the National Tobacco Control Bill at the National Assembly in Abuja that it is in support of balanced regulation for the tobacco sector.

Nigeria currently has no established framework for tobacco regulation and About 10 million Nigerians are currently at risk of both active and passive smoking. The lawmakers recognizes the rights of smokers, but also owe Nigerians the duty to protect non-smokers and regulate smoking.


Due to 'exploding’ HIV epidemic, WHO recommends antiretroviral medications to all gay men

For the first time, the World Health Organization WHO is strongly recommending that men who have sex with other men consider antiretroviral medications to help prevent HIV infection. The approach, called pre-exposure prophylaxis, calls for the non-infected to take a preventive pill every day. With such treatment, WHO predicts HIV incidence among gay men would ultimately fall by as much as 25 percent — and avert close to 1 million infections over the next decade.


According to WHO's statement on Friday,  “Rates of HIV infection among men who have sex with men remain high almost everywhere and new prevention options are urgently needed.” 
Statistics shows that the likelihood a gay man will become infected is approximately 19 times greater than the general population while Female sex workers, are 14 times more likely to have HIV than other women. The most high-risk groups are transgender women and intravenous drug users, who are 50 times more likely to be infected than the general population.

Society for Science & the Public, in partnership with the Intel Foundation, announced Grand Awards of the Intel ISEF 2014. Student winners are ninth through twelfth graders (i.e. Secondary School students) who earned the right to compete at the Intel ISEF 2014 by winning a top prize at a local, regional, state or national science fair.


Nathan Han, 15, of Boston won the Gordon E. Moore Award of $75,000 for developing a machine learning software tool to study mutations of a gene linked to breast cancer at this year’sIntel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public. Nathan is also an alumnus of the 2011 Broadcom MASTERS.


Lennart Kleinwort, 15, of Germany and Shannon Lee, 17, of Singapore both won Young Scientist Awards of $50,000 for their research on a mathematical tool for smartphones and tablets and a novel electrocatalyst, respectively.

The Gordon E. Moore Award recognizes the best of the Best among the outstanding students from around the world who participate in the Intel ISEF. The finalist with the winning project is selected on the basis of outstanding and innovative research, as well as on the potential impact of their work on the field and on the world at large.
